The Funky Monkey Book of Stories

Foreward
The Funky Monkey Book of Stories is a project created by two of our young people. Their idea is to create a book of stories for young children that will keep on growing. Lee and Scott have written this first chapter. They hope that other young people working with the Youth Offending Team will write futher chapters to create a constantly expanding book that can be read to children of nursery school age. See what you think.

Chapter One: My Greatest Adventure

Long ago but perhaps not so long ago, on an island far away, lived a monkey called Koko Pops. He did not quite fit in with all the other monkeys who were happy to eat drink and play all day. He did not fit in because he was sure that somewhere, some distance from their island was another world, he dreamed of it and he would not rest until he knew of it.
Every day he could be seen standing by the shore looking out to sea and his friends would call out:

“Koko Pops, Koko Pops, you are out of your tree”

He ignored them and continued to gaze into the distance. Then one day when the weather was really hot and sticky the monkey squinted because in the distance he saw a boy swimming toward the island. The boy was on a small boat that had crashed into a big rock. The boat started to sink very quickly and the boy jumped off the side of the boat. Just when he thought he would drown, a huge elephant appeared and, with his trunk, lifted him gently onto his back and took him safely to the shore. Out from nowhere Koko Pops the monkey jumped from a tree.

The monkey stared at the boy and the boy stared at the monkey!
Stare!
Stare!
Stare!
At first the Koko Pops could only make signs to the boy but soon the boy taught him to speak a lot of other different languages like French (un, deux and trois) and German (eins, zwie and drie) and sign language.

The monkey then introduced him to all the other animals on the island. There were monkeys, chickens, whales, hippos, tigers, parrots and donkeys. At first they all shook their heads and said how terrible humans were and called out:

Koko Pops, Koko Pops, you are out of your tree”
What a dreadful place that world must be.
"The humans put us in cages and stare at us.
Stare!
Stare!
Stare!"

“Oh no” the Boy said, “It's not all bad. We’ve got mobile phones, you can take a picture, send videos and texts, speak to people miles and miles away and say hello.”
The animals looked at each other in wonder. They needed to learn more.

Koko Pops asked the boy if he was going to stay with the animals. The boy said no because he would miss is family too much. The boy gave Koko Pops his hat to remember him by. Koko Pops said “I will give a you something to remember me by” and he whispered into the boys ear. “I will give you something that's hard to get. It is wisdom.”

Now my story is done, let the grass grow and let the river flow.
