AN EXPLANATION
"Shepherd's Pie" is a
project that grew and grew. It began when the Youth Offending Team
asked Craig Bradley, a local writer to see if he could work with
a few of our young people. Within days we saw a wealth of material
being produced. We began to plan a book of Creative Writing. The
working title was "Voices from the Red Room", named after
the office that the young people were working in.
The Youth Offending Team was working
closely with students at the Calderdale College Drama Dept. They
were producing a play for us. We showed the "Voices from the
Red Room" material to them. The students were so impressed
with the writing that they included some of it in the play. They
also changed the title of the play to "Shepherd's Pie Smells
Different Now", the title of one of the poems in our book.

As a result of that, "Voices
from the Red Room" became "Shepherd's Pie Smells Different
Now" and was published in March 2005. Demand for the book was
so high that we printed a second edition in April 2005.
Creative Writing is now firmly established
at the Youth Offending Team and we will be publishing a new book
every six months.
